  WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
2-27, 2-20 CCAA

The CSUDH women’s volleyball team endured a tough 2009, but showed its resiliency near the end of the season, bringing a good harbinger to next fall.

The Toros began the campaign taking just one set in the first nine matches, but that set was against No. 23 Western Washington in the SoCal Volleyball Classic in late August, co-hosted by CSUDH.  Starting league play on the road getting swept at No. 15 Sonoma State and Humboldt State, head coach Scott Davenport’s squad took home its first win of the season in a thrilling 3-2 win over Cal State East Bay on September 18 after dropping the first two sets, with Ashley Clark hammering home a match-high 23 kills with 21 digs, while Samantha Maxwell chipped in 28 digs and 18 kills in the 2:39 match.

That would be the highlight for the team until the final weekend of the regular season, when CSUDH enjoyed a 3-0 sweep over CS Stanislaus, with Maxwell posting 20 kills, and libero Hilary Hougardy 21 digs.

With the core of the Toro line-up set to return in 2010, as well as a talented group of newcomers, look for the CSUDH program to make big strides next season.

  CROSS COUNTRY
NCAA West Region Participant

Led by the return of program founder and head coach Deann Schlobohm, the CSUDH cross country squad made great strides in 2009.

Led by a strong and balanced contingent of dedicated runners bookended by freshman Erica Biehl and junior Gabriela Rubi, the Toros made a strong showing in each of their meets this season, with Biehl pacing CSUDH in two of the first three races, while Rubi dazzled in the four others, including the NCAA West Regionals that saw her break the 25-minute mark for the second time in her two 6k races.

Rubi, in fact, posted the highest individual marks on the year, including a 13th-place finish at the UC Irvine Invite in early September, and a 29th-place finish at the CCAA Championships in late October, ending her season posting the two fastest marks in both the 5k and 6k races.

NCAA National Quarterfinalists

The Toros came thisclose to earning a chance to repeat as NCAA National Champions as an NCAA quarterfinal match-up at top-ranked and undefeated Fort Lewis College loomed.  The Skyhawks, however, survived a handful of shots that were inches away from reaching the back of the net, and a penalty kick attempt that was guessed correctly, in taking a 1-0 decision over the 2008 NCAA Champions to end CSUDH’s run towards back-to-back titles.

Finishing at No. 6 in the nation, the Toros weren’t without postseason glory.  After claiming both the CCAA Championship and the NCAA Far West Region title, senior defender Kevin Gallaugher earned his second-consecutive NSCAA Player of the Year honor at year’s end after being named an All-American selection for the 5th and 6th times in his career, including four 1st-team honors.

Senior midfielder Andrew Marinez also earned multiple All-America awards, claiming NSCAA 1st-team and Daktronics 3rd-team honors, while six other Toros earned postseason honors, including redshirt freshman Markus Dickerson, who was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year as well as 1st-team NSCAA All-Region and 2nd-team Daktronics All-Region honorees.

After starting their defense with a 6-5-1 record after 12 games and facing the possibility of missing both the conference and national playoff picture, the Toros reeled off eight-straight wins to close the regular season, two wins in the CCAA tournament and two wins in the NCAA West Region before falling to the eventual NCAA champion Skyhawks

NCAA National Finalists

CSUDH reached the NCAA National Title game, falling to Grand Valley State in a 1-0 thriller.  Finishing runner-up in the CCAA Championship Tournament to cross-town rival Cal State L.A., the Toros exacted revenge on the Golden Eagles in the NCAA West Region final on CSULA’s home field in a semifinal match-up before disposing of perennial power UC San Diego in the region final on penalty kicks, also on the road, setting the stage for their dramatic run towards the national title.

Needing just one win to advance to the NCAA Final Four, sophomore scoring sensation Jessica Murphy lifted CSUDH to a convincing 5-2 quarterfinal win over No. 13 West Texas A&M with two goals, giving the Toros their ticket to Tampa, Florida, site of the NCAA Soccer Championships.

There, the Toros upped the ante, taking down top-ranked and undefeated West Florida via a 4-1 PK advantage, with Melissa Livergood sending CSUDH to the title game, a week and a half after clinching the PK win at UCSD in the West Region final.

Murphy and Paige Peel captured All-America honors for the NCAA Finalist and West Region Champions, also netting 6 All-Region, 4 All-CCAA, 1 CCAA Newcomer of the Year, 5 All-Tournament team, and 1 CCAA Player of the Week honors.  In addition, head coach Joe Flanagan claimed his 100th win during the season, and earned the NSCAA West Region Coach of the Year award after claiming the NSCAA National Coach of the Year honors after last year’s men’s title run.

What started out as a disaster nearly transformed into the feel-good story of the year for the CSUDH men’s basketball team.  Opening the 2009-10 campaign with seven straight losses to set the program record for futility, the Toros went on a tear after three key players became eligible in the new year, turning the league on its ear and challenging for the top of the CCAA ladder.

Returning just four players from a squad that advanced to the 2nd round of the 2008-09 postseason, CSUDH relied heavily on newcomers Michael Cox and Marcquintice Davis to shoulder the load by a trio of award-winning seniors.

Cox and Davis did not disappoint, leading the Toros to four wins in their next five games, the only loss coming to a resurgent Cal State L.A. squad on the Toros’ home floor.

After sweeping San Francisco State and CS Monterey Bay to close their first homestand of the year, CSUDH raised eyebrows around the league after taking a 58-49 win against last year’s NCAA finalist Cal Poly Pomona, on the Broncos’ home court.  That win bolstered another winning streak that saw CSUDH win 11 of its next 14 games, including an 86-84 win over perennial power CS San Bernardino in an epic match-up.

Despite that win, and two more victories in its final three games of the regular season, CSUDH couldn’t overcome Chico State in the first round of the CCAA Championships as the Wildcats upset the Toros, ultimately ending CSUDH’s run at a repeat appearance in the NCAA postseason.

Cox finished his inaugural campaign in Carson with a 1st-team All-CCAA selection, while Davis and senior Tim McGrath each claimed 2nd-team honors.

Next season, CSUDH returns 12 letter-winners, giving ample warning to the rest of the league that the Toros are back.

After winning the 2008-09 CCAA Tournament Title, this year’s Toro squad had high hopes.  Those hopes, however, took a sharp turn down after an opening-season win over CCAA doormat Cal State L.A. was followed by seven-consecutive losses.

A string of consecutive wins to close the 2009 calendar year and open the 2010 year gave the Toros hope, but four more losses in their next five games left CSUDH struggling for answers.

One of those answers became a huge question mark after all-everything Neka Mixon went down with an injury in mid-February, leaving the Toros searching for ways to replace her 17.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game heading into the final weekend of the regular season and the first round of the CCAA Championship tournament.

Dropping their final homestand to Chico State and CS Stanislaus, CSUDH had just three days to prepare for nemesis UC San Diego as the No. 8 seed in the tourney, and despite a valiant second-half comeback, the top-seeded Tritons ended CSUDH’s season in a convincing victory.

Mixon garnered the lone hardware for the Toros after her 2nd-team All-Region and 1st-team All-CCAA selections, and will anchor the 2010-11 squad as it looks to play its way back into the league’s upper echelon

  BASEBALL

CCAA Tournament Participant | NCAA West Region Tournament Participant

Enjoying its most prolific season since, well, 2009, the baseball squad earned hosting duties for the second time in the program's history before making a deep run in this year's NCAA postseason before falling to West Region Finalist Hawai'i Pacific in the region's semifinal match-up.

Finishing the regular season as a runner-up to top-ranked UC San Diego, the Tritons again bested the Toros at the CCAA Championship Tournament and in the winner's bracket of the NCAA West Region Tournament in a 4-3 classic that was playoff baseball at its best.

Finishing with a 41-20 mark, CSUDH was two wins away from tying the program’s record for most wins in a season set in 1987, when the Toros made their only NCAA College World Series appearance.

CCAA 1st-team selection and Newcomer of the Year Abel Medina led the squad with his .394 batting average, 51 runs scored 13 home runs, 64 RBI, .664 slugging and .462 on-base percentages, with 1st-team All-CCAA selections Kevin Pillar (.379, 91 H, 22 2B, 50 RBI, 12-16 SB) and Kyle Pond (.337, 40 R, 63 H, 16 2B, 7 HR, 50 RBI) giving CSUDH a formidable 1-2-3 punch.

Additionally, Pillar was the story within the baseball story this year, setting the NCAA Division II mark for consecutive games with a hit, reaching 54 consecutive games.

After 17 All-West Region selections, both Medina and Pillar come out on top with All-American honors as Medina claimed a 3rd-Team spot on the NCAA/Daktronics, Rawlings/ABCA and NCBWA ballots.  In addition to his All-American honorable mention nod, Pillar was named to the Rawlings/ABCA National Gold Glove team in the outfield along with second baseman Carlos Leyva.

Senior Andrew Baslow, returning from a mid-season injury, led CSUDH's post-season foray as he claimed the CCAA Tournament MVP award, and finished runner-up in the NCAA West Region MVP balloting after batting .500 with 3 home runs and a whopping 1.625 slugging percentage.

To close this history season, senior and two-time 2nd-team All-Region selection Bret Montgomery was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 46th round of this year's MLB draft, marking the sixth-straight year the Toros have had a player selected in the draft, and the fifth player selected under head coach Murphy Su'a.

  SOFTBALL
33-21, 23-13 CCAA
CCAA Tournament Participant

Led by six seniors, a sensational sophomore and two freshmen pitchers, the Toros got off to a quick start with six wins in their first seven games, including a 3-1 series win over perennial power and 11th-ranked Humboldt State to start league play as senior center fielder Katie Garcia and freshman pitcher Lauren Harper swept the first CCAA Player/Pitcher of the Week awards of the year.

The quick start, however, took a sharp turn down as northern California foes Sonoma State and Chico State each took 3-1 series wins over the Toros, sending CSUDH towards the bottom of the league’s standings.  The Toros returned the favor to CS Stanislaus and Cal State East Bay in their next two CCAA series, setting them up for the stretch run.  Participating in the prestigious Tournament of Champions, CSUDH made it to Sunday’s Gold Bracket with two wins to open the tourney, but were ousted by 3rd-ranked Hawai’i Pacific in a thrilling 3-2, 9-inning contest.

Competing against a top 5 team brought out the best from CSUDH, and they displayed their talent in splitting with UC San Diego on the road, and taking 3-of-4 from CS Monterey Bay and at CS San Bernardino before sweeping San Francisco State at home to close the regular season, earning the No. 3 seed entering the CCAA Championship Tournament.

In the double-elimination tournament, CSUDH won its first two games over higher-seeded regional teams to leap into the winners bracket before falling to No. 19 Sonoma State twice in the championship round for a runner-up finish in its first appearance in the league tourney, only to have the NCAA selection committee disappoint by keeping them at No. 8 in the region, where they were bumped from the NCAA postseason by the GNAC’s automatic qualifier.

Sophomore Emiley McEwen was named an NFCA 3rd-team All-America, a 1st-team NFCA All-Region, a 2nd-team Daktronics All-Region, and the league’s Most Valuable Player, the first MVP honor for the program since the epic 2005 season, after setting the single season and career marks for home runs, and for being amongst the league’s top hitters in nearly every category.  Katie Garcia, now a four-time All-CCAA selection, and Amber Angel joined McEwen on the 1st-team, while Caitlin McGrath earned 2nd-team honors in her first year in Carson.

Junior newcomer Ryan Indovina made an immediate impact on this year’s senior-heavy squad, claiming PING honorable mention All-America, PING All-Region, the first All-CCAA honor this decade and the first-ever CCAA Newcomer of the Year award en route to leading two Toros to the 2010 NCAA Central/West Super Regional as individuals, the first time any Toro has qualified for the NCAA postseason since 2004.

In seven meets, Indovina placed four top 10 finishes and two top 20, including medal honors in a dual match against UC San Diego, two runner-up finishes and a third-place finish, as well as one CCAA Player of the Week honor.  He averaged just over par in 19 rounds played entering the Super Regional, carding a low 18 score of 67, a low 36 score of 140 and a low tournament tally of 210.

Senior Cavin McCall also qualified for the NCAA postseason as an individual, enjoying a fine senior campaign that saw him average 3-over par for the year.  He shot a blistering 69 over the first two rounds of the Hanny Stanislaus Invite at CSUDH’s regular season finale to earn a 3rd-place finish, just one stroke behind Indovina.

Junior Robby Mayes made an impact on the squad, playing his way onto the quintet in the third match of the year, enjoying one top 10 finish and a 6-over average for the year.

Next season, the Toros will return Indovina and Mayes, and with new recruits, will look to earn a team invitation from the NCAA for the first time since 1989.

  WOMEN'S INDOOR/OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD
NCAA Outdoor Championships

The track and field squad showed why it’s one of the most talented teams in the CCAA, picking up four All-America and 12 All-CCAA awards at the league championships to go along with the CCAA Freshman of the Year nod in Monikkia White.

Led by All-American Chanel Parker, who posted an automatic qualifying mark in the 60-meter hurdles at the Fresno State Invitational and a provisional mark in the 60-meter dash at the NAU Invite during her indoor seasons, CSUDH posted seven provisional and an automatic during the outdoor season which saw Nancy Blake post the top time in the 400-meter dash at the Cal/Nevada meet, earning a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships in late May.

White posted two provisionals during the outdoor season to match Parker’s efforts while taking home a pair of All-CCAA honors, with both relay squads picking up All-CCAA awards at the championships.

Despite not qualifying for the finals over the first two days of the NCAA Championships, CSUDH saved its best for last as its 4x400 relay squad posted a 7th-place finish as the quartet of Breionna jackson, Parker, Dora Baldwin and Blake earned All-America honors to close the outdoor season.

The Toros will look to improve upon this year's results in the 2011 season, led by seniors Parker and Blake, junior Baldwin and sophomores Jackson and White.
