NEW YORK — Brady Conlan will have an opportunity to play professional baseball.
The recent Cal State Dominguez Hills graduate was taken by the Chicago White Sox with the 716th overall pick (24th round) in the 2016 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft Saturday.
Conlan, a 6-1, 215 pound third baseman, follows many Toros who have been taken by a major league team before him. Last year, Winston Lavendier (Los Angeles Angels), Kevin Brown (Los Angeles Dodgers) and Kamran Young (Minnesota Twins) were the most recent CSUDH players to be drafted from last year.
Although he wasn't drafted, former Toro player and assistant coach Fernando Gallegos' contract with the Lake Erie Crushers was purchased by the White Sox as well, setting up an chance for him and Conlan to play together in Chicago's organization.
Currently, Toronto Blue Jays centerfielder Kevin Pillar is the only Toro to play in the major leagues.
Conlan completed his three-year career as a Toro this past spring as a member of the second-team All-West Region by both the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Conference Commissioner's Association. He's also a first-team All-California Collegiate Athletic Association.
His senior campaign saw him play all but two of the 50 games the Toros played last season, in which he batted the second-highest batting average (.413) in the single-season history of the program. The Chatsworth native also slugged for a .550 average which included 15 doubles and three home runs, both of which were the best among the ball club. He finished second with 36 RBI.
Though he is not expected to immediately join the big league club, Conlan joins a White Sox organization that is ending Saturday with a .500 record (31-31). It is currently in third place in the American League Central, being only four games behind first-place Cleveland.
The Toros completed the 2016 season 22-28 overall, 15-23 in the CCAA.
