Women's Soccer's Lindsey Armstrong Takes Top Honor at Student-Athlete Banquet

CARSON -- A Cal State Dominguez Hills Presidential Scholar and winner of the CSUDH Presidential Outstanding Student Award for maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout her seven semesters thus far while also spearheading countless on-campus and community service ventures in her four years as a Toro, senior women's soccer player Lindsey Armstrong was announced as the Dr. Richard Butwell Award winner at Monday night's year-end CSUDH Student-Athlete Banquet by CSUDH President Willie J. Hagan to highlight the evening's festivities.

The Butwell award was one of 18 total presented for excellence in the classroom, in competition and in the community to student-athletes in the event honoring academic and athletic accomplishments from the 2015-16 school year, with eight milestone awards being doled out for single game/match, season and career achievements.

A new and improved addition to the banquet was a photo booth, of which the student-athletes and staff took full advantage, and whose photos can be found here.

Co-emceed by women's soccer's Sami Feinstein and baseball's Brandon Polizzi, the event was kicked off by CSUDH Athletics Director Jeff Falkner, and attended by all 10 sports as well as by CSUDH faculty and staff and special guests that included President Hagan, whose University welcome inspired the crowd as he explained the on-going University commitment to Athletics by sharing with the attendees what improvements have been, are being, and will be made for the department, elliciting a huge round of applause by the capacity audience, the largest in the history of the banquet.

As the event began, women's soccer's Lindsey Armstrong and golf's Bret Gleason received the Dr. Hal Charnofsky CSUDH Memorial Scholar-Athlete of the Year nods for their successful work in the classroom, while volleyball's Dana Brown and men's soccer's Bryan Haley were chosen as the CSUDH representatives for the CCAA Charnofsky Awards as recognized by the league office, all presented by Dr. Mike Ernst, the Faculty Athletics Representative.

Former Toro men's soccer player Ryan Taylor then spoke about former teammate Jaret "JT" Minami, who inspired the 2008 NCAA Championship run after passing away from a neurological disorder at the age of 25 that August, before introducing the JT Minami Memorial Scholarship in sophomore keeper Chase Gentry, with Minami's parents in attendance.

Volleyball's Alijah Gunsaulus received the Jennifer Winkelspecht Award from Compliance Officer Natalie Lockhart, an award named after the former Toro volleyball player who passed away before the start of the 1995 season and is presented annually to the Toro who most exemplifies great personal character, has had their achievement recognized by the student-athlete educators and peers, excels in their role on the team and displays this character beyond the field and classroom.  Baseball's Joe Bresson, meanwhile, received the Mike Sharp Most Inspirational Award from CSUDH's Dr. Mary Lou Cappel for making a successful comeback after becoming infected with encephalitis, winning the award for best inspiring his/her teammates to excel in competition through persevering with hope and courage.

Women's basketball's Monay Lee and men's soccer's Tony Alfaro earned the Student-Athlete of the Year Awards as presented by Associate AD Jamie Bouyer, with Lee earning All-America honors and her third CCAA Championship in four years, while Alfaro earned a pair of All-America awards en route to leading the squad to the CCAA title before being drafted by the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer, where he was participating in a community service event and unable to attend.

Men's basketball's Ivan Dooley earned a single game achievement award for 3-pointers made in a single game, while softball's Jamie Duran earned a nod for her no-hitter and track and field's Chloe Ramos picked up a plaque for setting the longest indoor triple jump mark in CSUDH history.

Volleyball's Cathryn Lopez, meanwhile, set the mark for single season digs with women's basketball's Breanne Garcia earning an award for free throws made in a single season.

Garcia wasn't finished collecting awards as she received a career plaque for establishing marks for the most points, free throws made, free throws attempted, highest free throw percentage and games played, with volleyball's Dana Brown adding onto the career set assist mark she set last year as a junior, and baseball's Brady Conlan setting the career-best batting average over a 3-year competitive career last Saturday in Carson on Senior Day.

Men's soccer head coach Joe Flanagan rounded out the career achievement award section after winning his 300th game as head coach back in September, with all the achievement awards presented by Mel Miranda, Assistant AD.

Track and field head coach Warren Edmonson next introduced his seniors to the audience and presented each with a framed photo and flowers, with cheer advisor Cameron Thurman following suit after golf head coach Ron Eastman delivered his "Senior Salute" in a pre-recorded segment as his Toros were en route from Florida after CSUDH golf claimed its second-straight PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship on Sunday.

Eastman and the champion Toros made an entrance soon after, with the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship trophy in tow as the seniors in attendance received their senior gift, a CSUDH padfolio.

The Dr. Richard Butwell Award, named after the former President of the University, is bestowed upon the student-athlete who goes above and beyond the call of duty, not only achieving success in the classroom and on the playing field, but who also is an active member of the community as a representative of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Armstrong has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during her seven semesters thus far, and started 15 of 18 games this year for the women's soccer team, also serving as a team captain.  Away from the pitch, the Health Science major was award the University's top honor last week, the 2016 Presidential Outstanding Student Award, for her work with both the on- and off-campus community that includes serving as the SAAC Vice President, coordinating participation in the Beacon Light Mission, Manhattan Beach Clean-up, San Gabriel Valley Youth Summit, Meals and Wheels, Red Cross Blood Drive, Magruder Middle School visits and outreach with Goodwill.

She also volunteers as a CSUDH research assistant, a Clinical Care Extender at St. Francis Medical Center, Transforming Care at Bedside volunteer at Cedars Sinai, a volunteer at the CSUDH Health & Wellness Fair, prepares the dining hall and serves lunch to the homeless at Glide in San Francisco, and serves as a member of the Presidential Scholarship Selection Committee.

Near the event's conclusion, SAAC President Bryan Haley from men's soccer announced the winners of the SAAC Challenge and the Talent Show, with women's soccer claiming both prizes that include a new set of uniforms for the 2016-17 year, as well as the SAAC Talent Show Trophy, the program's fifth-consecutive victory.

After being summoned from the bullpen by Polizzi, Falkner closed the evening by thanking the seniors for all they've given to CSUDH and reminding them that the Toros always will be here for them, before urging the underclassmen to enjoy every moment of their intercollegiate experience before it ends.
