Liz Krieger hit .321 as the Toros swept UC San Diego tonight in La Jolla
Box Score
LA JOLLA -- If ever a statement could be made after the first league match of the year, tonight's Cal State Dominguez Hills 3-0 sweep over perennial power UC San Diego could be heard loud and clear by the rest of the California Collegiate Athletic Association as it marked the first time in 20 years the Toros have earned a win over the Tritons.

With the 25-16, 28-26, 25-20 win, CSUDH improves to 3-5, 1-0 CCAA, while UCSD drops to 5-4, 0-1 CCAA.

Plagued by low hitting percentages during a 3-match loss coming into tonight, the Toros turned up their offense to the tune of a .243 hitting percentage, holding the Tritons to just .106.

After the hosts took a slim 4-2 lead in set one, the Toros tied the match five times before an 11-4 run by CSUDH turned an 8-8 tie into a 19-12 Toro lead, before strong serving by Rose Greco and Whitney Lee essentially closed the set in the 25-16 win.

The Tritons looked inspired in set two, taking a 10-5 lead early.  The Toros, however, showed the fight that 2nd-year head coach Jennifer Adeva has instilled in them, clawing back to a 12-all and fighting to 26-26, where a Triton service error and attack error gave set two to CSUDH.

Set three saw the Toros jump out to a 10-7 lead, and keep momentum draped in Cardinal and Gold as the advantage reached 22-17 late.  After two UCSD points cut into its deficit, CSUDH closed the door after kills by Hannah Oros and Dana Brown preceded the final hammer by Chelsea Armario, ending a streak of 30-consecutive losses.

Elizabeth Krieger boasted a match-high 12 kills with Almario adding 10, giving the Toros the only two hitters to put away at least 10 balls.

The new and taller Toros also boasted a considerable size advantage at the net of 8.0 to 4.0, with Lee stuffing two solo and assisting on four more.

To put this win in perspective, Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton was elected as the 42nd President of the United States in 1992, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the top song, and Disney's "Aladdin" was named the top grossing movie.

The Toros will look to duplicate tonight's effort tomorrow against CS San Bernardino, which was swept by Cal State L.A. earlier tonight.
