No. 10 Toros Open NCAA Regional With 1-0 Win Over Grand Canyon

Box Score
CARSON -- Junior Stephanie Jimenez was perfect through 4.2 innings and didn't allow a hit until the sixth, while pinch-runner Ciara Campos scampered home from second base on an errant throw to first to score the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh to secure CSUDH's 1-0 win over Grand Canyon in game 2 of the NCAA West Regional.

With the win, CSUDH improves to 42-13 on the year and will face No. 4 seed Sonoma State (36-17) in the winner's bracket's early game tomorrow morning, set for an 11:00 am first pitch after the Seawolves also took a 1-0 win on a Vanessa Currie solo shot in the sixth off No. 3 seed's Sam Baker in the opening stanza.

It was almost deja vu all over again, again, as the offensively challenged of late Toros came into the game having not scored a run in 14 innings.  But after posting a perfect 24-0 record at home during the regular season, the 10th ranked Toros and top-seeded team in the NCAA West welcomed the sights of Toro Diamond, and the marquee game of the day.

Jimenez did her part, retiring the first 14 batter she faced, with nine coming via strikeout.

A base on balls to the 15th batter she faced ruined the perfect game, and a lead-off single in the 6th spoiled her bid for a no-no.

But that was all the offense GCU could muster on the day as Jimenez picked up her 23rd win of the year.

The CSUDH offense, meanwhile, shook off its Stockton slump by whacking seven hits on the day, including two apiece by Jessica Hall and Christina Chavez.

Finishing the game with seven runners left on base, the Toros finally capitalized in their final at-bat after Chavez started the frame with a base hit.  After Campos came on to pinch run and was moved to second on a sacrifice, senior Jackie Reyes beat out an infield hit to third base, and when the throw eluded GCU's first baseman, Campos came home easily for the game-winner.

The Toros swept the Seawolves in the regular season series in Carson as Lauren Harper out-dueled All-American Samantha Lipperd with her 0.45 ERA and 13 Ks against just three walks as a trio of Toros tied for the lead with 5 hits each in series, with sophomore Veronica Vazquez tallying 6 RBI including going yard against Lipperd over the weekend.

In the middle game, No. 21 Chico State will battle Grand Canyon in an elimination game at 1:30 pm, with the winner to play its second elimination game at 4:00 pm against the loser of the CSUDH/SSU match-up.

In the other NCAA Division II Softball West Regional in Seaside, No. 3 seed Dixie State knocked off No. 6 seed UC San Diego, 3-2, and No. 2 seed and host Cal State Monterey Bay blew out No. 7 seed Montana State Billings, 12-4 in six innings.

Tomorrow's 11;00 am showdown against the Seawolves can be heard live on the Toro Sports Network at www.GoToros.com/live.
