Chapjian and Young Named Daktronics 2nd-team All-Region Selections

Matthew Young (L) and Sako Chapjian both were named 2nd-team Daktronics All-Region selections
CARSON -- Juniors Sako Chapjian and Matthew Young both received Daktronics 2nd-Team All-West Region honors, it was announced by the Daktronics coordinating office this morning.

This marks the second all-region nod for Young after earning National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) honors earlier, and first for Chapjian.

Chapjian, who was one of two designated hitters to be named to the All-Region team, started for the Toros in 37 games solely as an offensive player, hitting .288 on the season, scoring 38 runs on 47 hits.  Leading the team with 32 RBI, Chapjian recorded 10 mulitple RBI games, including eight contests with two RBI and two contests with three runs batted in.  He was second among his teammates with 14 doubles and seven homeruns.

With an on-base percentage of .393, the Duarte native reached on 22 walks and 10 hit-by-pitches this season.  Among the CCAA leaders, he finished fifth in sacrifices, as well as ninth in homeruns and doubles.

Young picked up his second all-region nod after being named CCAA Co-Newcomer of the Year, a 1st-team All-CCAA selection, and the CCAA Player of the Week to close the regular season earlier this month.

Setting himself apart from the other outfielders nominated was his CCAA-leading 28 stolen bases, good for 28th in the NCAA.

In league play, Young ranks in the top 10 in slugging percentage, batting average, runs, and hits, as well as ranking second with nine homeruns (two ahead of teammate Sako Chapjian) and just two less than the conference leader, Edwin Mendoza of Cal State San Bernardino.

The duo looks to lead the Toros back to national prominence next season, barring being selected in June's Major League Baseball amateur draft that saw four Toros drafted last year, the most of any CCAA school.
