Young Named NCBWA All-West Region Second-Team

CARSON -- Junior outfielder Matthew Young was named a 2nd-team All-Region selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, it was announced by the NCBWA earlier.

Joining him on the 2nd-team were Chico State's Blake Gibbs and Cal Baptist's Andy Crowley.  The three shared the All-West Region honors with six others dispersed amongst both 1st-team and honorable mention honors. 

Among all of the outfielders nominated, Young led the West with 28 stolen bases, tied for second with 9 homeruns on the season, and was third in slugging percentage.

This month, Young has tallied awards for his outstanding 2012 performance, named the CCAA Player of the Week in early May for his contribution to a season-ending series split with Cal State San Bernardino before earning both CCAA 1st-team and Co-Newcomer of the Year awards, the latte shared with Ryan Goodbrand of CCAA Champion UC San Diego.

The centerfielder started in 46 games for the Toros, leading the club with a .357 average.  He led the team with 41 runs on 61 hits, including 18 multiple-hit games.  Young also recorded eight contest with two runs batted in and one with three RBI.

Young also led the CCAA conference the entire season in stolen bases, good for 28th in the DII national statistical rankings.
