Carmelita Jeter Named Sportswoman of the Year by LA Sports Council

LOS ANGELES -- Reigning World Outdoor gold medalist and 2011 Jesse Owens Award winner Carmelita Jeter will be named Sportswoman of the Year at the LA Sports Awards to be held March 15 at Club Nokia at LA Live.

This will be the seventh edition of the LA Sports Awards, which are given annually by the Los Angeles Sports Council to honor the best moments of the year in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.

This is the latest honor in a standout season for Los Angeles native Jeter, who earned six All-America awards during her career at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Her season was highlighted with gold medals in the 100m and 4x100m along with a silver medal in the 200m at the World Outdoor Championships in Daegu, South Korea.

Jeter also claimed the USA Outdoor title in the 100m along with the Diamond League championship in both the 100m and 200m.  It was her second consecutive Diamond League championship in the 100m.

Allyson Felix previously won the Sportswoman of the Year award in both in 2007 and 2009.

The CSUDH Alumni Association will feature Jeter as part its "A Discussion With ..." series on Thursday, February 9, from 6-8 pm in the Loker Student Union.

The Sports Council is a private, non-profit organization which supports economic and community development through the promotion of spectator sports programs in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas, including support of our local teams and the attraction of events to the area.
