CSUDH's Indovina Qualifies for U.S. Amateur After Taking Top Honors at Qualifier

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. -- Continuing his stellar play that saw him claim an NCAA Division II PING Honorable Mention All-America honor after the 2010 season, Cal State Dominguez Hills sensation Ryan Indovina took home top honors at the Red Hill Country Club qualifier in Rancho Cucamonga on July 26, punching his ticket to the 2010 U.S. Amateur on August 23-29, held at Chambers Bay Golf Course.

"It's the opportunity of a lifetime, and what all the hard work is for," says Indovina, as a matter-of-fact.  "This is the number one amateur tournament in the world and just to have a chance to play there and compete is an accomplishment in itself, but I'm going to go for it and see what happens."

Indovina shot a 140 to take the qualifier by a single stroke, leading a contingent of five golfers from the qualifier to make the field of 312 players.

Indovina's honor follows a stellar inaugural season in Carson, claiming 1st-team PING All-Region honors prior to his All-America accolade, and 1st-team All-CCAA and the CCAA Newcomer of the Year after the regular season's conclusion, with the latter marking the first-ever Newcomer of the Year honor for a CSUDH golfer.

Establishing himself as the top golfer on the Carson campus throughout the 2010 season and one of the top golfers in the league, Indovina also earned the CCAA Golfer of the Week honor after his debut tournament.

In seven meets, he placed four top 10 finishes and two top 20, including medal honors in a dual match against UC San Diego, two runner-up finishes and a third-place finish, as well as one CCAA Player of the Week honor.  He averaged just over par in 19 rounds played entering the Super Regional, carding a low 18 score of 67, a low 36 score of 140 and a low tournament tally of 210.

As an individual at the NCAA Regionals, Indovina came within one stroke of qualifying for the NCAA National Golf Championships, finishing with a total of 220 and in a 6-way tie for ninth place.

Indovina's honor is the third all-time in the golf program's history, following Pat Burke and Mack Smith, both of whom earned All-America status during their collegiate careers.

The U.S. Amateur at Chambers Bay takes place from August 23-29, in University Place, Washington.  Following two days of stroke play (August 23-24), the field of 312 players will be reduced to the lowest 64 scorers, who will advance to match play.

Those who make the quarterfinals are exempt for next year's U.S. Amateur, with the two finalists earning exemptions to the next US Open while retaining amateur status.  The U.S. Amateur champion will be invited to the Masters and the British Open.

All matches are scheduled for 18 holes except the final match.  The scheduled 36-hole championship final match is Sunday, August 29.

The Golf Channel will broadcast Wednesday through Friday's action, with NBC taking over for the weekend's play.
