Bret Montgomery Selected by Los Angeles Dodgers in 46th Round of MLB Draft

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Senior hurler Bret Montgomery, a two-time All-West Region honoree in the 2010 season, became the first Toro to go in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft as the Los Angeles Dodgers nabbed him a selection in the 46th round.

"I am more relieved than anything that I can keep playing baseball," said an excited Montgomery from home.

"Overall I am very happy that it is with the Dodgers, after idolizing their players and always watching them as a kid it is a dream come true but it was also great being a Toro for three years and I will definitely keep track of our guys."

A native of Thousand Oaks, Montgomery broke out in his senior year, adding 94 Ks to his now career total of 191 in his three years in the Cardinal & Gold.  Overall in his career Montgomery compiled a 13-10 record in 36 appearances while also hurling five complete games en route to a 2.95 cumulative ERA.

The Toro record book will not forget Montgomery after his 2010 season, his 94 strike outs rank at No. 5 on the CSUDH single-season list while a complete-game effort on February 13 against Cal State L.A. with 5 Ks granted him a no-hitter, the fifth in Toro history.

This marks the sixth straight year that the Toros have had a player selected in the draft and the fifth player selected under the tenure of current head coach Murphy Su'a

Montgomery was the 10th player from the CCAA to be selected, with Sonoma State, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State all grabbing selections in the earlier rounds.

Montgomery will now await word on where he will be sent in the Dodgers farm system, the most likely team being either the Arizona League Dodgers or the Ogden Raptors.
