DOWNEY -- A picture perfect day provided an apt backdrop for last Friday's 20th Annual Toros Scholarship Golf Classic, an event that welcomed a sold out contingent of golfers at the stunning Rio Hondo Golf Club in Downey, California, with all proceeds going to Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes.
"On behalf of our student-athletes, athletics department and CSUDH, I would like to thank all of our sponsors and participants for making this year's golf tournament a tremendous success," begins CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen.
"The sold-out field had an enjoyable day on a wonderful course and it translated into meeting our goals financially for the event. Thank you!"
The Toros Scholarship Golf Classic, which serves as CSUDH Athletics' major fundraiser, featured CSUDH baseball head coach Murphy Su'a as the spirited auctioneer for the live auction that closed the evening.
After the 12 noon shotgun start kicked off the modified scramble (shamble) format and golfers got their fill from boxed lunches, they were welcomed by Guillen after making their way into the ballroom once the day of golf ended, where an opportunity drawing, silent auction items and a buffet dinner awaited them.
Once the silent auction ended, filled with many one of a kind classics, baseball head coach-turned-auctioneer Su'a brought the excitement to a new level during the live auction as a 5-night stay at the Mauna Lani Point Resort in Hawai'i, two seats atop the Wrigley Field rooftop (airfare included, courtesy of jetBlue Airways), and the best seats in Dodger Stadium (on the field behind home plate) all became hot commodities towards the event's frenzied conclusion.
As for the round of golf, the team of Chris Boudreau, Josh Boudreau, Pat Stafford and Pat Susdorf claimed the lowest total gross score, with Peter Rice, Scott Bridges, Jeff Melichar and Matt McBride earning the lowest total net score.
The quartet of Anthony Darby, Brian McKnight, Joe Torry and Rudy Freeman finished with the second lowest net score.
Individually, Josh Boudreau and Shelley Fruin were respective male and female longest drive winners, with crooner McKnight taking home the closest to the pin honor.
This year's event again featured both the jetBlue Hole-In-One Challenge, which gave golfers three opportunities for four great jetBlue golfing vacation packages, as well as an opportunity to win a car, with the insurance sponsored by D&G Paving.
Pin-Up Golf, a company assisting with the overall fund-raising efforts of today's event, helped add to the tournament, selling mulligan packages and opportunity drawing tickets.
