Kevin Logan (L) and Andrew Klausmeier were selected to summer baseball leagues after only one year in collegiate competition
BASEBALLTOWN, U.S.A. -- For most, summer vacation is a chance to rest and relax before taking on the challenges of the upcoming fall semester. But for 11 Toro baseball players, they will continue the action in summer leagues across the states, highlighted by the double-threat of freshmen Kevin Logan and Andrew Klausmeier who in their first year as Toros were selected to prestigious teams.
Overall the Toros will compete on seven different squads with representation from 11 players in leagues that start in the first week of June and run through mid-August.
An entirely new experience for Klausmeier, he says "the league is very competitive but I am up for the challenge and will have my faith with me everyday on the field."
Selected by the Wisconsin Woodchucks in the Northwoods League, Klausmeier will make an immediate impact from the hill, joining him on the team will be fellow CSUDH standout Kevin Pillar as they look to take on Carlos Leyva of the Wisconsin Stingers in league play.
Making a strong case for himself as a contender of the CCAA Freshman of the Year, all-around threat Logan will be joined by Jose Jauregui as they compete for the Cheyenne Grizzlies in the Mountain Collegiate League (MCL).
Logan is also looking forward to the next few months, saying, "I look forward to the new experience of getting in a different league and meeting new people."
Also in the MCL, David Fair will see action against both Logan and Jauregui for the chance to strike out his teammates.
Two Toros will get the chance to travel out of country, Sean Wardour and Shane Youngdale will both hurl for the Kelowna Falcons of the West Coast League, calling British Columbia their home for the next few months.
All teams are operated similarly to a professional minor league club providing players an opportunity to play under the same conditions using wooden bats, minor league specification baseballs, experiencing overnight road trips, and playing nightly before fans in a stadium.
All players in the summer leagues must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid, thus preserving their NCAA eligibility.
