Toros Stunned in 5-4 Loss to Hawai'i Pacific in Day Three of NCAA West Regionals

Andrew Baslow takes a hearty congratulations from assistant coach Josh Tavelli after his home run

COMPTON -- The highly-anticipated rematch of this year's CCAA Tournament came to an abrupt end as the Hawai'i Pacific University Sea Warriors shot down the No. 24 Toros of Cal State Dominguez Hill in a 5-4 decision, ending the Toros' deepest run into the post season since 1987.  NCAA West Region Tournament MVP contender and senior Andrew Baslow set a positive tone in the loss, belting his third straight homer to notch the first run on the board for CSUDH.

"I am truly blessed to have been a part of this program and to have the coaching staff and teammates that I had," said an emotional Baslow after the game.

Providing much-needed fuel for the Toro fire in the post season, Baslow nailed a home run in four of his past five games to end on a string of three straight after today's contest.

After starting strong with a run in the first, two in the second on Dean Benavidez and Carlos Leyva back-to-back RBI singles, and the final Toro run in the third on a Steve Carrillo RBI single, the Toros were shut down for the remaining six courtesy of staunch HPU hurling.

"Hawai'i Pacific is good and so was their starter Matsumoto," said coach Murphy Su'a.

"There was some complacency in the dugout after the first three innings and my job as a coach is to make sure there is still energy in the dugout, but we just couldn't get it going after that."

Although taking the loss, Toro starter Shane Youngdale was more than nails on the day, fanning seven batters and holding HPU to one run until the explosive eighth frame.

"I was just doing the same thing all game and that one pitch got away," said a dejected to matter-of-fact Youngdale.  "They turned the game around on it."

A junior, Youngdale will be looked upon as the leader of the Toros' four "horsemen."

"I will always have this bad chip on my shoulder, and next year that is going to fuel the fire throughout the season."

Ending the season with their most heart-breaking loss, 2010 was unparalleled in CSUDH's success, for not only how the Toros did on paper, but also how they represented the program as well.

"Our success on the field was quite tremendous, while the academic success of the team and the cohesiveness of the team this year was great," says Su'a.

Aside from Kevin Pillar setting the new all-time NCAA Division II game hit streak record at 54 games, Pillar also ended with 91 hits, now the No. 3 total on the Toros' all-time Top 10 lists.

Other notables include Bret Montgomery 94 Ks that put him in the No. 4 place all-time for the Toros, with Abel Medina's 13 homers to place No. 5 and 64 RBIs good for No. 2.

Pillar's 22 doubles puts him at No. 3 in the top 10 list, Matt Phillips's 28 appearances is No. 5, while Kody Kurowski rounds out the statistical individual accolades at No. 5 on the Toro charts.

With the 2010 season now officially in the books for the Toros after a 41-20 mark, the Toros have played 61 games this year to put them in a five-way tie with four other seasons for the most games played at 61.

The Toros look to make a return appearance in the NCAA West Regional in 2011, looking to improve ten-fold on the bar that was set last year and raised this year.

Baslow summed it up best after the game saying, "
Next year they will carry the legacy forward because we have started something that is never going to go away."
