Student-Athlete Banquet Recognizes Athletics' Best

CARSON -- Softball senior #Katie Garcia# made history tonight at the Cal State Dominguez Hills Student-Athlete Banquet after being selected as the Dr. Richard Butwell Award winner for the second-consecutive year, the first Toro to achieve that honor in the history of the program.

Garcia's award, presented for excellence in the classroom, in competition and in the community, was one of 17 total awards presented to student-athletes, coaches and administrators in the event honoring academic and athletic accomplishments from the 2009-10 school year.

Emceed by Toros men's basketball assistant coach / Facilities Manager #Max Ward#, the event was attended by all 11 sports as well as by CSUDH faculty and staff and families whose respective names appear on two separate awards.

All in all, 14 awards were presented to student-athletes on the evening, with two going to head coaches for milestone achievements, and the last to an administrator and ardent supporter of Athletics who is retiring after 11 years of service to the CSUDH campus.

Women's basketball's #Barbara Houston# and men's soccer's #Scott Mariano# received the Dr. Hal Charnofsky CSUDH Memorial Scholar-Athlete of the Year nods for their successful work in the classroom, while baseball's #Bret Montgomery# and softball's #Jessica Marlow# were selected as the CSUDH representatives for the CCAA Charnofsky Awards, as recognized by the league office, with Montgomery also receiving a certificate for his no-hitter earlier this season.

Women's soccer's #Kristan Boyle# received the Jennifer Winkelspecht Award with Winkelspecht's parents in attendance, an award named after the former Toro volleyball player who passed away before the start of the 1995 season and is presented annually to the Toro who most exemplifies great personal character and has had his/her achievement recognized by the student-athlete educators and peers.

Baseball's #Abel Medina#, the CCAA Newcomer of the Year, and women's soccer's #Jessica Murphy#, already with an All-America honor under her belt, were recipients of the Student-Athlete of the Year Awards.

Head coaches #Joe Flanagan# (women's soccer) and #Murphy Su'a# (baseball) both were presented a plaque for respective wins No. 100, while baseball's #Kevin Pillar# received awards for being selected as the Comeback Player of the Year by CSUDH ATC #Tim McGuire#, and for setting the NCAA Division II record for consecutive games with a base hit at 54.

The Dr. Richard Butwell Award, named after the former President of the University, is bestowed upon the student-athlete who goes above and beyond the call of duty, not only achieving success in the classroom and on the playing field, but who also is an active member of the community as a representative of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Garcia, who carried an overall "B" average as a kinesiology, pre-physical therapy major, was a key contributor both in the numbers she put up on the field in leading her team to a runner-up finish in the CCAA tournament, and to within one game of the NCAA postseason en route to earning her fourth All-CCAA honor in the past four years, with All-Region and All-America honors to be announced later this month.

Beyond the softball diamond, Garcia serves as an officer on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and has been at the forefront of all SAAC related community services activities the past three seasons, all while holding down a part-time job, putting clinics with her team as well as occasional outside coaching duties.

Golf's #Kenny Roberts# received the Mike Sharp Most Inspirational Award, an accolade that acknowledges the student-athlete who best inspires his/her teammates to excel in competition through persevering with hope and courage, while CCAA Softball Player of the Year #Emiley McEwen# was presented two certificates for establishing the single-season and career home run marks this year.

Leading up to the night's final two awards, and after CSUDH's coaches recapped their respective seasons, a video montage of the 2009-10 season was played, capturing moments from not only athletic competition, but from community service projects as well, including a tribute to the graduating seniors and a recap of the awards won throughout the year.

In a fitting tribute near the beginning of the event, CSUDH Director of Athletics #Patrick Guillen# presented the Inaugural Athletic Director's Legacy Award to Randy Zarn, CSUDH Associate VP of Student Life, Enrollment Management and Student Affairs, who is retiring this month after 11 years of service to the university, and for his continual support of CSUDH Athletics.
