Strong Toro Pitching Grounds Panthers in 3-1 Win Over Chapman University
3/10/2010 5:26:55 PM
Box Score
CARSON -- Strong pitching from a total of six Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball hurlers was key as the Toros held the visiting Panthers of Chapman University to only three hits in a 3-1 non-conference win. Grabbing his first win of the season,
Alan Gatz
logged two innings and scattered only one hit on the day.
Utilizing the game as a staff pitching day, no Toro pitcher gave up more than one hit, with starter
Andrew Klausmeier
facing only eight batters in two complete frames while allowing just one hit.
The visitors would score their only run of the day early, an unearned run after a CSUDH error allowed a Panther to reach base, where he was eventually driven home on an Adam Kordich RBI single.
The Toros answered back in the bottom of the frame as
Kevin Logan
grabbed his first RBI of the day with a well-placed single off the pitcher's glove that found its way to center field to bring home Steve Carillo, who reached on a single of his own.
Needing only one more run to secure the win,
Dean Benavidez
poked one through the diamond and took home on a Panther error for the game-winner.
Key from the dish,
Abel Medina
grabbed three hits in four at-bats and scored the Toros' third and last run of the day, the last coming way of another Logan RBI.
Picking up his third save of the year, designated closer
Matt Phillips
faced only four batters in the ninth, striking out two to close out the game.
Though taking the loss, Travis McGee fanned six Toro batters in seven innings with only one earned run after three Panther errors.
The win improves the Toros to a 13-7 overall record as they will now host Cal State East Bay as CCAA play resumes. First pitch of game one is set for Friday, March 12, at 2:00pm.
