Carrillo's Solo Shot Sends Toros to 3-2 Extra Inning Win Over Cal Poly Pomona
2/4/2010 9:58:10 PM
Box Score
COMPTON, Calif. -- Senior
Steve Carrillo
saved the biggest of tonight's four hits for extra innings, taking an 0-1 pitch from Cal Poly Pomona's Joshua Krist, and belting it over the left field fence as CSUDH picked up its first win of the 2010 season in thrilling fashion in game two of the Inaugural John Scolinos Memorial Tournament, taking place at the MLB Urban Youth Academy, on the campus of Compton College.
Saving his biggest hit for last, Carrillo used his first hit of the game to land the Toros on the board in the first frame, sending an hard-line single through the right side to drive home
Abel Medina
.
The Broncos got their first say in the third as Travis Taijeron blasted a double off CSUDH starting pitcher
Kody Kurowski
to deep left to tie the ball-game for the next three frames.
Both teams used back-to-back innings of scoring to send the game into extras, the Toros grabbing a
Carlos Leyva
run from second-base off a Medina single in the seventh, and the Broncos taking the easy way with a Nick Tanos homer over left center in the eighth.
Starting the tenth frame deep into the night as the lead-ff batter, Carrilllo needed only two pitches to send a 400-foot blast over left center, giving CSUDH the lead.
Giving the Broncos one last chance, reliever
Andrew Klausmeier
picked up the win after fanning two Pomona batters to end the night.
Torrid Pomona defense nearly ended the game for the Toros, CPP stranded 12 of CSUDH's runners, making every run hard-fought.
Fighting from the mound, the Toros sent three pitchers while the Broncos took their try with five. Opening action for CPP, Travis Kelly led on the night with five strike outs, both Kurowski and
Sean Wardour
fanned three apiece for CSUDH. The Toro staff was perfection from the mound, having to throw a total of only 144 pitches while seeing 176 from the Broncos.
Offensively, Carrillo went 4-of-5 from the bag with second honors going to Medina at 3-of-5.
The win gives CSUDH a 1-1 record to send them into action against Cal State San Bernardino tomorrow as action in the John Scolinos Memorial Tournament continues. First pitch is slated for 2:00pm, weather permitting.
