CARSON -- Three days after getting off to a rough start at Grand Canyon to start 2009, the defending national champions regained their form in their home opener against Cal State San Marcos after the raising of their championship flag in a pre-game ceremony, and the result was an inspiring 4-0 win after two goals by senior Andrew Marinez to bring CSUDH to 1-1 on the young season.

Marinez started the scoring deluge in the 26th minute, taking a John Sherman feed from the left side and blasting his shot past Cougar keeper Kevin Ernst for a 1-0 lead.  Freshman Andre Turoldo then got in on the act 12 minutes later as he took a pass from Tyler Petry and dribbled down the left sideline, weaving his way around a CSUSM defender and slotting his shot by Ernst near post to double the Toro lead.

Marinez got his second goal of the night after taking a feed from Scott Mariano and again beating Ernst near post for a 3-nil lead entering the half.

After Mariano and women's soccer player Paige Peel were honored as the inaugural recipients of the JT Minami Memorial Scholarship at halftime, Mariano concluded the scoring in the 48th minute with a PK goal following a foul in the Cougar box.

The defending champions were a step ahead of the Cougars on this night, out-shooting them 29-10 for the game to give redshirt freshman keeper Markus Dickerson his first win and shutout as a Toro, with a 12-3 advantage in corners.

CSUDH, now 1-1, faces cross-town rival Cal State L.A. on Tuesday, September 8, to kick off CCAA Conference play, with first kick set for 7:00 pm in Toro Stadium, on the Track and Field Facility of the Home Depot Center.
