Toros Land Six All-CCAA Awards, Including Freshman of the Year

Walnut Creek, CA -- Seniors Regina Farfan and Liz Vazquez capped stellar careers with 1st-team All-CCAA nods while freshman Emiley McEwen ended her first campaign in Carson on a high note after claiming the CCAA Freshman of the Year award as well as 2nd-team honors to highlight five Toros picking up All-CCAA hardware.

Juniors Katie Jordan and Katie Garcia both earned 2nd-team All-CCAA honors to round out the CSUDH award winners, each player's third All-CCAA award in three years.

The workhorse in the circle for the Toros, Farfan captured her first All-CCAA award after earning her first career NFCA Pitcher of the Week honor for her stellar effort at the Tournament of Champions.  In addition to also boasting two CCAA Pitcher of the Week honors, her 25 wins ranks her 6th in the NCAA, and tops in the CCAA by seven wins.  The Chino native also leads the league in innings pitched (next highest is 93 innings less, and finished the regular season 3rd in batters fanned looking, 6th in batters fanned, 9th in ERA and 10th in opposing batting average.  In her stellar senior campaign, Farfan set the CSUDH single-season record for appearances and games started.

A co-captain, Vazquez earned her first All-CCAA honor after making her mark on both offense and defense.  The Carson native ended CSUDH's regular season as the toughest person in the NCAA to strike out, and finished leading the league in assists and tying for 3rd in fielding double plays.  Vazquez also was 2nd on the team in triples, 3rd in hits and 4th in doubles, boasting 14 multi-hit games and 4 multi-RBI efforts, which included a team-high 10-game hit streak.

McEwen made a huge impact as a true freshman, earning one CCAA Player of the Week Award while placing 2nd in walks, 4th in OB%, 5th in batting average, 7th in triples, 8th in hits, SLG% and total bases, and 9th in RBI in the CCAA.  The Anaheim native finished the regular season leading the team in hits, RBI, BA, SLG%, OB% and triples, and was 2nd in HR and 4th in runs scored and doubles.  Additionally, McEwen boasted a superb walk-to-strikeout ratio of 4.6:1 en route to setting the CSUDH single-season record with 32 walks.  She also boasted 14 multi-hit games, including 1 4-hit effort and 3 3-hit games, and drove in at least two runs in 10 games, including 1 4RBI effort and 3 3RBI games.


Jordan earned her third All-CCAA accolade in three years after again establishing herself amongst the league’s top 10 in batting average (8th) and stolen bases (8th).  The Huntington Beach native also led the team in stolen bases and fielding percentage, was 2nd in batting average and hits and 5th in runs scored.  She finished 2009 with 15 multi-hit contests, including 1 4-hit game.

 

Garcia joined her teammate with her 3rd All-CCAA honor after continuing her reputation as one of the best defensive players in the league.  Tying for 4th in the CCAA in doubles, Garcia started all 58 games played this season, connecting for 54 hits and two home runs.  The Riverside native also had two assists and kept many a runner from advancing with her quick release and rifle arm, committing just two errors on the season.

The Toros, who finished 35-23, 17-15 CCAA, finished tied for fifth in the CCAA Conference, and dropped out of the NCAA West's top 8 after being swept by CS Stanislaus to end the regular season.  Next year, however, CSUDH returns 10 letter-winners to a program that has won 30 or more games eight of the last nine seasons and has made the NCAA postseason in five of the last seven years, including four of six seniors who will be completing their four-year careers in Cardinal and Gold.
