Cody Puckett & Bret Montgomery Receive 1st-Team All-CCAA Accolades

Four Toros overall earn All-CCAA recognition

Carson, CA - Junior Cody Puckett and sophomore Bret Montgomery have been named 1st-Team All-CCAA honorees after a pair of tremendous seasons in Cardinal & Gold, leading a contingent of four Toros who received All-CCAA recognition, it was announced this afternoon by the California Collegiate Athletic Association Conference office.

Puckett, who was named to the All-CCAA teams as a freshman (1st) and sophomore (3rd), had a stand-out year for the Toros, leading the CCAA in homeruns (17), walks (42), stolen bases (26), total bases (130), and runs scored (61), while finishing in the top 10 in every offensive category.

“He is very deserving of the 1st-team All-CCAA award, and I really thought that he had an MVP type year with his numbers,” states CSUDH baseball head coach Murphy Su'a.  “I believe he now has a chance to play at the next level and be successful.”

On the mound, Montgomery dominated opposing hitters, ranking fifth in the CCAA in ERA (2.67) and opposing batting average (.232), while allowing the fewest hits (48) in the conference.  The right-hander fanned 52 batters in 57.1 innings on the mound.

“It was a little bit of a surprise simply because of the injury and missing a few starts down the stretch,” begins Su'a.  “But because of his success earlier in the season, that's what I feel made the other coaches take notice of his ability.”

Kevin Pillar earned 2nd-Team All-CCAA honors for his play in center field for the Toros, marking the third-straight year that a CSUDH center fielder earned All-CCAA honors.  The true freshman ended the season leading the CCAA in hits (77), while ranking 4th in stolen bases (17) and 6th in batting average (.379).

“Kevin had an impressive season as only one of two freshmen names to the 1st or 2nd team,” states Su'a.  “His numbers were impressive for any level, but as a freshman they were tremendous.  I believe that this might just be the tip of the iceberg from what we will see from him.”

First baseman Jon Alia took advantage of Puckett's adeptness at getting on base all season long, finishing 7th in the CCAA in RBIs (48) en route to being named a 3rd-Team All-CCAA selection.  The junior ended his debut season for the Toros 6th in the conference in homeruns (10) and 10th in slugging percentage (.583), while ranking 1st in chances (460) and putouts (420).

“Jon had a tremendous season and he stepped into in a spot where we were not sure what we were going to get,” says Su'a.  “He more than exceeded our expectations.”

Next season, the Toros look to return nearly their entire line-up and starting rotation after claiming six more overall and five more conference wins this year than in 2007.
