Elite Honored at CSUDH Athletics Annual Student-Athlete Awards Banquet

Carson, CA -- Toros volleyball senior setter Tiffany Bull was bestowed the prestigious Dr. Richard Butwell Award for her excellence in the classroom, in competition and in the community, highlighting the final presentation at last night’s Cal State Dominguez Hills Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, which honored student-athletes from the 2007-08 school year for their all-around excellence.
   
Emceed by Toros men’s basketball assistant coach / Facilities Manager Max Ward, the event was attended by all sports except softball, which departed Tuesday morning to Arcata, California for the NCAA West Regional Tournament, as well as by CSUDH faculty and staff, CSUDH corporate partners, and families whose respective names appear on two separate awards.  All in all, nine awards were bestowed to student-athletes on the evening, while two others were presented to Toro supporters for their contributions throughout the year.

 Women’s soccer’s Sandy Lloyd and golf’s Raphael Malabanan received the Dr. Hal Charnofsky CSUDH Memorial Scholar-Athletes of the Year nods for their successful work in the classroom, while men’s basketball’s Jamaal Barnes and women's cross country’s Janet Ramer were chosen as the CSUDH representatives for the CCAA Charnofsky Awards as recognized by the CCAA league office, with CSUDH men's basketball head coach Damaine Powell accepting on behalf of Barnes, who was in Florida working out with the Slam Ball organization.
   
Volleyball’s Travette Pettigrew received the Jennifer Winkelspecht Award with Winkelspecht’s parents in attendance, an award named after the former Toro volleyball player who passed away before the start of the 1995 season and is presented annually to the Toro who most exemplifies great personal character and has had his/her achievement recognized by the student-athlete educators and peers.

 Women’s basketball’s Jessica Liang, who holds five Toro records and single-handedly clinched the eighth and final spot in the CCAA Tournament after scoring a career-high 30 points in the penultimate game of the regular season, and baseball’s Cody Puckett, who led the CCAA in six categories and was in the top 10 in eight others, were recipients of the Student-Athletes of the Year Awards.
       
The Dr. Richard Butwell Award, named after the former President of the University, is bestowed upon the student-athlete who goes above and beyond the call of duty, not only achieving success in the classroom and on the playing field, but who also is an active member of the community as a representative of Cal State Dominguez Hills.

 Bull, who carries a 3.1 GPA in communications and contributed heavily to her teammates' success both on and off the court, also made time to involve herself in functions as Hurricane Katrina Relief, collecting clothes for victims of the San Diego fires, participating in food and clothes drives on Skid Row, and spending time in an orphanage in Mexico as part of her church outreach efforts.
   
Baseball’s Martin Conde received the Mike Sharp Most Inspirational Award alongside Sharp’s parents, an accolade that acknowledges the student-athlete who best inspires his/her teammates to excel in competition through persevering with hope and courage, while Athletics supporter Dr. Blaine and Bp Carson Refinery’s Walter Neil also were acknowledged with special awards from Athletics Director Patrick Guillen.

 Leading up to the night’s final two awards, and after CSUDH’s coaches recapped their respective seasons, a video montage of the 2007-08 season was played, capturing moments from not only athletic competition, but from community service projects as well, including a tribute to the graduating seniors and a recap of the awards won throughout the year.
