Walnut, CA - Cal State Dominguez Hills saw its 2008 outdoor track and field season come to an end late Thursday night as freshman Deirdra Pettigrue, the lone Toro to qualify for the NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships, placed 16th in the 400-meter dash in a race that was delayed nearly three hours due to weather conditions.
Pettigrue, who was recently crowned the CCAA Champion in the 400-meter dash, was one of five freshmen to qualify for the championships, and was one of three runners representing the CCAA in the race along with Rebekah McCall (Cal State L.A.) and Tokunbo Adeniji (Cal Poly Pomona).
However, experience trumped youth as none of the five freshman qualified for the 400-meter finals to be held on Saturday, with Pettigrue turning in a time of 57.48 to place her 16th in the final race of her freshman season.
"It wasn't her best race, obviously, but she proved throughout the year that she already is a force to be reckoned with," says CSUDH track and field head coach Warren Edmonson. "But overall I was happy with her performance and look forward to her helping get CSUDH back on the All-America map next year."
