Toros Give More Than Thanks at Carson "Mayor Jim Dear Turkey Give-A-Way"

Carson, CA -- For the second consecutive year, Cal State Dominguez Hills student-athletes were in full force at the Mayor Jim Dear Turkey Give-A-Way, which took place last Saturday at the Carson mall.  Joined by CSUDH Director of Athletics Patrick Guillen, the Toros spent over an hour packaging turkeys, handing them out to deserving Carson residents, and assisting the elderly by taking the turkeys to their cars.

Members from women's soccer, softball, baseball and volleyball attended the event along with Mayor Jim Dear, Council Member Harold C. Williams, various community churches, Chivas USA, the Carson Women's Club and the NAACP to name a few.

Three of the four CSUDH Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) officers in volleyball's #Ashley Clark# (President), softball's #Katie Garcia# (Secretary) and baseball's #Kevin Pillar# (Treasurer) participated, with the fourth in men's soccer's #Andrew Marinez# (Vice President) gearing up with his teammates to battle 3rd-ranked Midwestern State in the NCAA Quarterfinals later that night, which the Toros won, 2-1.

“This was the second year that we were able to help Mayor Jim Dear for this event, and
I was so proud of our student-athletes for jumping right in to help in any way they could," beamed an elated Guillen, a Carson native himself.

"
Giving back to our community is what we are all about in Toros Athletics, and we have a lot to be thankful for, even in these difficult financial times.   I am thankful that the Mayor once again called on us to assist him in this very special event.  It was a special moment for me and I am sure it was for the student-athletes, the Mayor and his staff, too.  It was a sight to see!”
